Call for Papers

Calamities, Challenges, Conflicts, and Crises:
Rethinking Medical Humanities

Ever since the occurrence of coronavirus pandemic in 2019, it has profoundly changed the way we live. As the whole world is still under threat of different variants and of the outbreak of infectious diseases such as monkeypox, meningococcal disease, and Disease X, we are consequently forced to adapt ourselves to this prolonged challenging time by learning how to coexist with these diseases before we can overcome them. While the pandemic and the emerging infectious diseases have strongly impacted on our life in almost all aspects and tend to keep on doing so at least in the foreseeable future, they certainly draw our attention to a great variety of issues that we may or may not have perceived and/or thought through previously, impelling us to contend with them for both our current state and what is yet to come. With this conference, we intend to open more critical conversations under the theme, “Calamities, Challenges, Conflicts, and Crises: Rethinking Medical Humanities,” as a way in which we reflect upon our strength and limits not only as individuals but also as a community of life, particularly in this era heavy with these difficulties on an unprecedented level. By so doing, we hope to obtain both courage and wisdom that allow us to face our mortality in poise and, at the same time, remain strong and active in life. As surgeon Atul Gawande states, “Courage is strength in the face of knowledge of what is to be feared or hoped. Wisdom is prudent strength” (Being Mortal 2014: 232). In this regard, we welcome papers exploring any aspect of the theme of this conference. Possible topics include, but are limited to:

  • Aging, disability, and healthcare
  • Body problems and the disciplines of shame
  • Discourses and terminologies of diseases
  • Discourses of plague, pandemic, and outbreaks
  • Diseases writings and narrative therapy
  • Disease as metaphor and body politics
  • Epidemic prevention policies and national stability
  • Medical enhancement and (post)humanity
  • Medical hegemony and healthcare
  • Medical resources, well-being, and social justice
  • Physician writers and medical humanities
  • Prolonged pandemic and its effects
  • The Anthropocene and medical humanities
  • The use of comics in patient care and medical education

Please submit abstracts under 250 words (including 3 to 5 keywords) in English, with a brief bio (including author’s name, title, affiliations, and contact information) to imhrc@nycu.edu.tw by September 23rd (Friday). Acknowledgements of submission will be sent to submitters when abstracts are received. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by October 12th (Wednesday).
